Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: Beyond the Conversation

by TanyaMonteiro on 08/06/2012

Since the Penn State “explosion” it sparked a huge amount of awareness about the reality of sexual abuse I’ve been noticing how much media coverage this disease is receiving. Almost no one believes they would allow sexual abuse to happen if they knew it was going on and allot of people are even certain that they would know if it were happening yet these are the stats that we are dealing with today.

  • 63,940 children were confirmed victims of sexual abuse in 2010.
  • The annual cost of personal crimes, including child abuse, is estimated to be $450 billion.
  • Child sexual abuse is often undisclosed by the child and unreported by adults when they do become aware of it.

Why? I ask this constantly and as this article rightly points out my guess is that no one is comfortable talking about it, not even the people who have it happen to them. Often the risk of embarrassment and shame far out ways the risk of remaining silent.

The article point out that we can not rely on Government agecies, which is obvious and probably impossible for any agency to handle. Tanya, thanks for working on everyone’ awareness, that’s what will make a difference.

These numbers are stil toooooooo high, enormsly high. Thanks to people like you we are all much more aware of this crime, but stil exists and the silent remains, less but stil…. Big hug… almost giving you one… millions… in real! Deo
